This is the best book I have ever read on security and personal defense. Quick, easy to read sections cover personal defense on the street, at work, the college campus and how to make your home safe. This should be required reading for everyone! Love the discussion about carrying less than lethal defense weapons. As a CCW holder, I appreciated the discussion on less that lethal items such as pepper spray, ASP batons and knifes and the many ways we can protect our self and family without having to use a firearm in some situations.

Jim Grover's (alias: Kelly McCain)guide to staying alive and avoiding crime is one of the best books ever written on the subject of personal security. This is a book that should be studied and also used as a reference guide to anyone interested in real life strategies in dealing with crime and criminals in the real world. This fantastic book has so much incredible information that this review cannot do it justice. The introduction alone covers such topics as: Don't be a victim, test your security savvy and big four self-defense tips. This tomb covers physical security issues in your home, street smart advice, security when traveling, modern crime factors, children's safety issues, alternative weapons, combatives, and great shooting advice. If you only buy one book on personal safety, this is the book. Rating: 5 stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Pro-Systems Combatives, Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton, Monadnock Defensive Tactics System, Samurai Aerobics, PR-24 Baton Advanced Techniques)

This book is excellent! It combines the authors knowledge on firearms, non lethal weapons its pros and cons as well as security and in the house.
alot of commonsense approach on personal protection. Not just emphasizing on Firearms alone. I would recommend it to anyone. Male or female, young or old. Strong or wimp.

I purchased this book with the idea that it would offer some suggestions on self defense and in a particular some practical guidance on choosing a hand gun. Instead what I got was an anthology of dated recycled editorials from Guns and Ammo magazine that gave superficial attention to the subject matter with a heavy underlay of right wing rhetoric and suggestions on how to recruit novices to the "Guns Movement". If you want that sort of thing the NRA puts out a very nice glossy newsletter. every so often.
Does anyone know of a practical guide to choosing a fire arm that is needs based and not political?. I mean the right gun, for the right purpose with the right ammo, right training, right maintainence, right safety and storage....just the facts. For many of us a gun is just a gun, meaning an appliance meant to be chosen and used carefully for a prticular purpose; not an anatomic extension or political fashion statement good or bad.

I purchased the book from another site which failed to list the book as a compilation of Jim's magazine articles of the last 15 years. I have read most of his articles in "Guns & Ammo" and regard him as a true expert in the field of personal combat tactics and self-defense.
But,this book was boring to me and I read/reveiwed it in one evening. I can recommend this book to any novice as a good starting reference.
More advanced students of practical & effective techniques and tactics of self-defense,I can recommend my "Listmania" Self Defense of amazon books and Jim Grovers DVD"Combat Pistol" an excellent source of realistic scenarios for survival.
